Underworld/L.A. River Rafting/The Exploration/Hidden Life
This was originally a trio of pieces recorded in sequence, flowing into one another. There was a good bit left after the original fadeout, and with a tiny bit of editing (turning off some parts which didn't quite fit), it became 4 pieces for this edition. "Underworld" seems to be a continuation of "Canadian Underground"- there was a dream a few nights after where I found myself wandering around a subway in the middle of the night, trying to figure out what happened to the people I had known and finding no clue. "L.A. River Rafting" refers to those people who tragically get killed every year trying to ride some kind of aquatic conveyance in the the L.A. storm drains when they fill up from rains- when it's been dry, there is no L.A. River. It seemed like whenever we had torrential rains, someone would at least die trying to get sporty on the water, and often others would die trying to save them. "The Exploration" is about people who get their "away" and quiet time on the muddy, plant and garbage strewn banks down in the unpaved parts of the L.A. flood control basin/river. I did a lot of that when I was in my teens. And "Hidden Life" is what you find down there.
lyrics
The exploration
Searching for a secret place
Our own
We played this game as children
We still need it now
Down here wet cement vaults
And muddy shores
A shunned place to make camp
Underneath it all
Beneath the games
On the refuse of others
We find some color
Some rest
And the world goes away for a while.
