Sounds And Conversation
This originally appeared on Darkland Express as "Sounds Out My Window", and featured just that- the sounds of a parking lot being cleaned up with rakes and air blowers, very noisy. The full piece is long and has yet to appear anywhere. The section included here was used at the end of the previous tape and CD versions. In the background, almost entirely buried by the sounds coming in, is a conversation between my Dad and myself. Dad is very much a model for the kind of behavior I exhibited and refer to in lyrics here and elsewhere. In some ways he spent much of his life running. He's why we moved so much. He felt trapped and anxious at jobs. He preferred to be out of the structure and in the cracks. It was just his nature. Because of the huge age difference between us, it was until he was nearly gone that I began to understand our similarities. Dad very much belongs in these recordings. He went through his own Darkland before I was even born. I don't think he ever came back. He lived in both places at once. I'm not sure he had a choice. I've never entirely felt I had one either.
