I'm OK
There's a scene in "Taxi Driver" that I always think of when I hear this piece. Travis is slipping into the psychosis that eventually overtakes him, and he reaches out to his fellow cabbie Wizard, who gives Travis an inane little pep talk and finishes it with "You're all right. You're all right." When I was starting to have similar problems and feared I might be hazardous to others (especially when driving), I heard similar things from people who I knew cared about me and wished me well. They basically couldn't believe I could, or would, hurt anyone else. Ultimately they were right. Only I know how close they were to being wrong. I'll tell you this: all it takes is a zig instead of a zag, a moment with a little less self-control and a little more rage, a little more irritation and a little less resistance to what's trying to claw its way out of you...
