about

Originally released as "The Watermelon Seed", 12/25/16

Re-released as "Foreign Object" 11/19/20

Leave it to me to unthinkingly give a horror story the same title as a children's book. This was originally called "The Watermelon Seed", because of the physical appearance of the central object of the story. For some reason, the confusion with the children's book didn't occur to me at the time. But shortly after its release, a friend reminded me of it by thinking the album was about it. Since I'd already done an album based on one children's book that year ("Toad is the Uncle of Heaven"), it wasn't really a stretch. But this is not a children's story. So after stewing about it for some time, I've decided to rename it something more appropriate.

"Foreign Object", as it is now titled, is the story of an alien implant, from the original abduction to its eventual removal. Years and multiple abductions take place in between, memories surface, interaction becomes more conscious, etc.

There are no lyrics, there are musical changes which may suggest things. Other than the beginning and end as outlined, you can fill in the blanks yourself.

Before there are any panties 'a gettin' in a twist, it's fiction and I am not selling anything but the music. Whatever your feelings on the subject, and its placement on the scale of truth from subjective bullshit to objective fact, it's a story and not a polemic. My previous reticence to speak about the subject matter had to do with not wanting to have that discussion repeatedly, to the exclusion of the work itself. It's just music and I hope you enjoy it.
